I’m so pleased to be able to offer you this update
on the growth of Jewish life on the campuses of Haverford
and Bryn Mawr Colleges. The various student groups have
settled into successful leadership roles and are looking
forward to a well-planned and exciting semester. Through
their efforts and enthusiasm, Jewish life will be lively
this semester, from social to educational to religious activities.
Educational programming takes the spotlight for planning
this semester. The students are planning several programs
to this end, including a showing and discussion of “American
History X”, an interfaith visit to the mikvah, a chocolate
seder, a Latke-Hamantaschen debate in conjunction with the
faculty, and a panel presentation and question-and-answer
session on “Queer Clergy”. All this is in addition
to weekly Jewish text study over dinner, which continues
to attract around twenty students weekly.
Social programming is also a focus at the beginning of this
semester. The new JSU tradition of holding a monthly birthday
party is still going strong. The students are also planning
a Purim-themed masquerade celebration following a performance
of Chaverim, the Tri-College Jewish a’capella group.
Last but not least, an event is being planned to help the
year go out with a bang – JSU goes to a Phillies game!
Regular Shabbat attendance continues strong, with 25-40
students gathering every week to welcome Shabbat with services
and dinner using their own, unique Siddur. Every week, at
least five dedicated students work together to make sure
the room is set up perfectly, a delicious dinner is prepared,
and beautiful services are lead.
A strong second semester means many things for JSU, among
them that the student board remains dedicated to their commitments
as Jewish leaders on campus and that new students continue
to attend original events that interest them as Jews. Students,
however, can only do so much. I know that they continue
to appreciate your role in the success of JSU. It is through
the ongoing generosity of so many parents, alumni, and friends
that we are enabled to create an atmosphere of Jewish pride,
education, and community.
As we enter the Jewish season of new growth and renewal,
I hope that you take pride in your contribution to the Bi-College
Jewish student Union. On behalf of JSU at Haverford and
Bryn Mawr, I thank you, again, for your ongoing support
and generosity.
Sincerely,
Leigh Ann
