8th Dimension is the College's student volunteer program. It was conceived by a group of students in 1976 who wanted to bridge the gap between their social concerns and academic pursuits. These students felt the College should make a concerted effort to put a program in place that allows the community to become actively involved in an area upheld by Quaker beliefs.
The program got its name because the Haverford curriculum requirements were divided into seven "dimensions," and community service was seen as the missing link for a complete education at Haverford. This eighth dimension of a Haverford education would reflect the college's traditional Quaker social concerns.
Since its inception in 1978 the 8th Dimension program has grown immensely. Its first project (PIP) was organized in the early 1980s and more programs developed in the late '80s including youth, AIDS and hunger & homeless focused projects. Other student-run projects included the HOAP Project, the annual Spring Break project. Currently, Eighth Dimension is becoming more concerned about the service learning component that involves classroom interaction with social service agencies.
