The Serendipity Day Camp is another program under the 8th
Dimension umbrella. This day camp is sponsored by the College for
children 6-13 years of age. The camp runs for seven weeks during the
summer (starting the last week of June and ending the second week of
August). The camp staff is composed of Junior and Senior Counselors.
Senior Counselors are mainly Haverford students and a few area
community college students. The Junior Counselors are people from the
neighborhood, staff, faculty and children who are fifteen years or
older.
The day camp is usually directed by Haverford Alums who have been counselors as students. The activities include daily swim time, art and crafts, nature, hiking, sports, drama, singing, use of computers, weekly field trips, movies, and other events. The more creative the counselor ideas, the better the activities. The finale is the Annual Drama Night, an opportunity for campers to show their stuff the day before camp ends.
Serendipity Day Camp costs $90.00 weekly, with financial support offered to parents who need it. In order to provide this service to parents, Serendipity is supported by money donated from an Annual Gospel Concert (over 25+ years), Rotary funds, and donations from individuals and some churches. The College gives in-kind support by providing space to carry out the daily program.
Students interested in becoming a Senior Counselors should look for the letter from Roger Lane & Marilou Allen, sometime in late November or early December. If you miss the letter, you can email Marilou Allen for more information. The camp is always looking for people who have great ideas and are energetic, spontaneous, patient, and willing to work happily in the heat and rain.
