On average expect approximately three to four hours weekly. Attrition is an unfortunate reality in our program so we expect our volunteers to follow through with their time commitments. If you feel that this type of time committment will not be possible for you, don't give up on volunteering! We have many one time only volunteer opportunities like our workdays and special opportunities. Check out the calendar, workdays, and upcoming opportunities sections of this webpage for current possibilities.
A: Yes, we sponsor special one-time volunteer opportunities (ie. Work Days) throughout the semester on Saturdays or Sundays. Eight Dimension also works with social service agencies in the area to recruit for one day events (ie. AIDS Walk, Special Olympics) that occur on most weekends.I Also some student run projects, like HIP, take place primarily on weekends and others can be scheduled for weekend participation, like One on One Tutoring.
A: No, just a willingness to commit.
A: 8th Dimension reimburses public transportation costs or gas mileage for all volunteer placements outside of Haverford. To be eligible for reimbursement, come by the 8D Office (3rd Floor of Founders) to fill out a volunteer application and pick up reimbursement forms. You must have your service work approved by Marilou Allen in advance in order to receive reimbursement.
A: Yes, we provide one-time opportunities to students who have a desire to volunteer but are time constrained. 8D sponsors Work Days that involves a variety of activities from serving lunch at a battered women's shelter to cleaning trails at the Riverbend Environmental Center. Check the Calendar to see what upcoming Work Days you could sign up for.
A: No, many agencies are in the nearby Haverford Community such as the Senior Citizens Center of Ardmore. Don't let distance or the lack of a car prevent you from taking part in community service. There are many agencies located walking or biking distance from the college. Of course, many agencies are accessible by SEPTA public transportation, with travel costs reimbursed by the 8D office.
A: Yes. Community service can be a way to complete Physical Education requirement. Students can earn 1 or 2 credits per half semester, depending upon the credit needs. First year students are not eligible for this option. For all other students wanting information about this option, they should contact Carole Gormley, in the Athletic Department or Marilou Allen, in the 8D Office for more information.
