Be an Upper-Class Advisor

UCAs are juniors or seniors who live on the hall and are particularly adept at navigating the complicated waters of academic requirements and the academic departments. UCAs work in tandem with the Faculty Advisor in advising first-year students about their class choices. An integral member of the peer support team for new students, UCAs are paired with Customs People, Peer Awareness Facilitators, Honor Code Orienteerers and Ambassadors for Multicultural Awareness to assist first year students with their adjustment to all aspects of life at Haverford.

UCAs are chosen from a wide pool in the spring by a committee including faculty, current UCAs and Deans, and undergo rigorous education to serve as an advisor. UCAs normally attend training programs during the second half of the spring semester, immediately following Commencement, and again in late August before the arrival of the incoming class.

If you would like to be considered for a UCA position, you should submit a letter stating your qualifications (academic and otherwise) and your reasons for interest in a UCA position along with the names of two Haverford or Bryn Mawr faculty members who may be called upon as references. This letter should be addressed to Dean Raisa Williams and submitted to her office (Chase 207) no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, January 28th. Selection criteria include knowledge of the curriculum, extra-curricular contributions, leadership, and ability in counseling and advising students.

Please note that, to be a viable UCA candidate, you must be able and willing to live in any of the first-year housing areas in Barclay, Gummere and HCA. If you do not feel as though you could accept an assignment in all of these areas, please do not apply to be a UCA.
