Spring 2008 Season

Knecht Cup:

On Saturday, April 12, we travelled to the Cooper River in Camden, NJ to compete in the Knecht Cup. We raced a women's four, women's eight, men's four, and men's pair, giving everyone who could come the chance to row. The men's pair started off the day early, racing just as the rest of the team arrived and coming in fourth and just six seconds behind Lafayette. The women's four raced next; coincidentally, they also coming in fourth at six seconds behind Lafayette, and beat Sarah Lawrence by a full minute and a half. Next was the men's four, who finished last but still felt that they rowed very well. In the afternoon the women's eight finished fifth with an exciting finish, pulling ahead of Penn State in the last few hundred meters to finish with a hard-earned two-second lead. Official results are here under events 2, 5, 6 and 24 (note that events aren't necessarily in order).

Murphy Cup:

On Saturday March 29, we participated in our first regatta of the semester, which took place in Philadelphia.  We were able to enter two women's fours and a men's pair, despite temporarily having a somewhat diminished team due to other commitments. First to race was the women's A boat - they rowed strongly and finished first in their heat, advancing to the finals. The women's B boat raced next, rowing remarkably well after having had only four days to practice together and placing sixth. Next was the men's pair, coming in third in their heat and also advancing to the finals. After having already rowed nearly eight kilometers (the 2 kilometer race plus the rather circuitous route to the start and back from the finish), the women's A four raced again in the afternoon, finishing fourth in their final. The men's pair finished the day with a fifth-place finish in their final. Official results can be seen here under races 21, 23, 31, 51, & 54.

Fall 2007 Season

Philadelphia Frostbite Regatta:

On Saturday November 10, Haverford Crew participated in the Philadelphia Frostbite Regatta.  Despite the 40° weather and numerous last minute complications, the team made a showing for itself, cheered on by parents and friends.  The men’s four raced first, coming in a close fourth in the second lightweight division.  Despite losing some ground in the first 500 meters, the men’s boat rowed strongly through the body of the 2 kilometer piece and gained steadily on Binghamton, closing a significant gap to less than a boat length at the finish.  The women’s eight raced soon after, rowing steadily through their competitors and leaving all but one boat struggling in their wake; they finished second with a 30 second lead on the third place boat.  Official results can be found here under races #41 and #43.

Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta:

The crew team had a busy weekend; on Sunday November 11 we competed in the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta in Philadelphia. The women's eight rowed in the morning, finishing in second place but only three seconds behind the first-place boat. The men's four, in a borrowed boat they had never rowed before, also came in second in their heat, beating two boats by more than a minute in the 1500 meter race. The women also raced a four -- although they had already raced earlier in the day and hadn't gotten a chance to practice together they stuck with the competition, coming in fourth but only 13 seconds behind the leaders. Official results are here under races #32, #85, and #86. The Braxton was the last event for the team this semester.
