II.        General Discussions

This was a lengthy meeting, and we got a lot accomplished, but I hope you’re up for some reading.  We started off by speaking with our lovely guest, Katie.  She began by addressing the issue of confidentiality in the Code and how it is addressed.  Students in MASAR and SARSE have been discussing the issue and have considered the following idea in some capacity: if a student is separated for committing a violent crime and returns to campus, he/she should know that their confidentiality is at risk.  There is nothing finalized at all, but it is something that will be tackled in the near future.  Jenn said that perhaps a discussion about this topic could be sponsored by SARSE, MASAR, and HC at some point.  If you have questions or suggestions at this point, you may contact us.

On another point, Katie told us about Rape Awareness Week will be occurring the week of March 28 – April 2.  There are a variety of activities planned for the week: a speaker on acquaintance rape, a self-defense workshop, and a conference are among those on the books right now.  The conference on April 2nd will include discussions focusing on rape (especially at Haverford) and will conclude with a vigil that night.

Jenn and Lucy updated us on current Council / Campus happenings and looked for updates on projects / committees:

·                      The UPenn / Honor Council meeting will hopefully take place in the next couple of weeks.  Ranen informed us that he had fun when he spoke with them for HCO Committee.  So then!

·                      It is most likely that we will hold off on the Mock Trial for the time being.  April 16 is in the works as a possibility.

·                      The Admissions sub-committee is getting on top of things.  They have spoken with the Admissions Office and are considering a change to the question that is currently part of the application.  The new applications (for the class of 2005) are printed in June, so a change is possible if approved by the Office.  Katie said that some view the question as “getting” a desired answer from applicants, and Ari said it would be best to get a question that truly challenges people to question themselves and the Code.  After some digging, the subcommittee found a publication that they would like to distribute in part to prospective students.  According to Celeste, this new brochure would have the “juicy parts” of the Code and reflections by former students on the Code.

Jenn spoke to us about what Executive Council has been doing in the past couple of weeks concerning the Honor Code and Plenary.  First of all, they sent a letter to alums concerning their experience with the Code via the list server (I don’t know what this is exactly so I could be incorrectly naming it).  So far there have been some interesting responses.  There has been a lot of discussion on Exec Council about how to work with the potentially large number of resolutions and how to construct a Code with them.  There is great emphasis being put to the resolution-writers to work with each other and keep other resolutions in mind.  The next discussion will take place at 10.15 PM in Campus Center 205B.  If you would like to take a look at the resolutions on the table right now, go to temp storage and look in the folder marked Students’ Council.

Jenn & Lucy went to the last faculty meeting and presented concerns about the Code and its current state relative to Plenary, &c.  In general, participation & input from faculty will be very important to this Plenary; one way to further involve them is to have discussions at times other than our nocturnally scheduled meetings.  Lunch and afternoon meetings have been suggested by students and certain faculty members.  Many of the faculty members didn’t realize what was happening with the Code/Plenary until our Chairs dropped in on their meeting.

V.        Moment of Silence

Primero, these minutes do not necessarily reflect the views of Haverford College but are rather my interpretation of what your delightful elected representatives have to say. On a note that was not discussed in the meeting but that I find important because I did it: the past two Council trainings have now been typed up.  I have them, and if you would like to read them to see just exactly of what our trainings consist, let me know.  According to my sources, by the way, March 22nd is National Goof Off Day – make the most of it.
